Beam dynamics challenges in linear colliders based on laser-plasma accelerators

Abstract In this paper we discuss design considerations and beam dynamics challenges associated with laser-driven plasma-based accelerators as applied to multi-TeV-scale linear colliders. Plasma provide ultra-high gradients ultra-short bunches, offering the potential for compact linacs reduced power requirements. We show that stable, efficient acceleration quality preservation is possible in nonlinear bubble regime of laser-plasma using shaping. Ion motion, naturally occuring dense beams (i.e., low emittance high energy) severely damps transverse instabilities. Coulomb scattering by background ions considered it shown strong focusing plasma strongly suppresses scattering-induced growth. Betatron radiation emission from motion will result loss energy spread growth; however sub-100 nm emittances, growth be sub-percent multi-TeV-class linacs.
